Yowie Bay to
Augathella (Queensland)
As you can see, we have managed to get our bikes and boat onto our "Custom Boat Loader". Surprisingly we can load the boat on and off without taking the bikes off. It all misses by inches. The straps need to be twisted down the sides otherwise they hum in the wind.
We left Yowie Bay a day later than planned, mostly due to
the fact that I was still sick from the week prior when we were down in the snow. When we arrived
into our lodge at Perisher we were greeted by sick residents and yes, it got me.
It didn’t get everyone as Jayne, Alexis, Tony, Sue, Shane and Sarah all survived
this onslaught of germs, Chuck was suffering a bit this week as well.
Our first night (15th August) was spent at Gunnedah which
was really nice, Jayne and I enjoyed a Chicken Schnitzel at the local Services
Club where they had a two for one night so the two Schnitties cost us all of
$14! We lashed out and have “surf and turf” sauce on them!
Unbelievably the temperature got down to +2⁰C overnight.
Luckily we had power so our electric blankets kept us warm.
We then drove 400kms to St George, and as soon as we
crossed the border into Queensland it started to get warmer. We camped at the St
George Fishing Club but didn’t do any fishing, there was nothing in the river
according to the other campers there. It was amazing that 400kms made such a
difference to the temperatures. Overnight it only got down to 20⁰.
The LandCruiser continues to love a drink, it’s guzzling
through diesel at around 27litres/100kms today. The boat on the roof doesn’t appear
to have made any major difference, but the wind is what's killing it. Normally
it gets around 23litres/100kms.
We stopped at a free camp last night, 44kms north of
Augathella, and are onto Longreach today for two night’s stop, our first double
nighter since we left.
