Edith Falls and Kakadu National Park

We enjoyed 2 nights camping at Edith Falls. The camping here is quite nice due to the defined well spread apart camping areas and abundant green grass to sit on around y

our site. Even though it’s a National Park the sites are allocated by the office, so there’s no fight for spots and nobody is allowed to camp in an unallocated spot.

The falls have a wide plunge pool at the base which is very handy to the camping, so we were able to have an enjoyable dip after setting up the van etc.

There's a 2 hour walk up to the top of the falls where there are more swimming holes, but we didn’t go into these.

We had to drive back to Katherine for the day to buy more beer and food, as the grog shops don’t open until 2pm! But it was an easy drive each way and we were back to Edith before we knew it.

Then it was of into Kakadu National Park and Gunlom Falls. This is one of the more popular waterfalls in Kakadu due to the ease of access. This still meant 50kms of corrugated dirt road to get there and 50 back.

We had 2 nights there, did the hike to the top of the falls where there is a natural “Infinity Pool” and this is very spectacular. We had the place almost to ourselves for about 15 minutes before the 1st bus group of Europeans descended on us. Then it was very busy. Jayne had to ask a young euro male to stand back from the edge as she was sure he was going to fall off.

We were able to have a fire there and we enjoyed the fantastic night sky as there was no moon.

It was then off to Cooinda Campground which is a commercial ground about 50kms south of Jabiru. We meet up with Roy and Marg here and enjoyed 4 days of socialising with them.

Jayne and I did a 20km ride down to the river where you can't swim due to the Crocs, but it was a good workout!

There's a swimming pool there, 2 in fact, so we were able to make the most of the 35C temperatures around the pool.

We’ve managed to do lots of drinking and eating with Marg and Roy as well. So we’re not dying of thirst or staving here.

We’re off to Darwin on Tuesday 14th for an extended stay there, as well as a flight into Arnhem Land for a week and Justin and Mel joining us for 4 days when we’ll come back into Kakadu and stay at the Crocodile Hotel in Jabiru for 2 nights.
