Timber Creek to Kununurra

Zebra Mine Campsite and Lake Argyle Wetlands Cruise

It's always hard to revisit a place and enjoy it as much as the first time. Well at Zebra Rock Mine we certainly ticked that box off successfully, and after a slow start it turned out as good if not better than our last time here in 2016.

The Sunset Cruise was much more laid back which in fact turned out better for us. The owner/guide Kim is a real character with a rough and ready personality so we had fond memories of his last commentary, although he was much less talkative on this trip. The sunset was just as spectacular as we experienced last time.

There are no salt-water crocs in Lake Argyle, they were all shot years ago and can't get up the slipway now

But you wouldn't want to annoy this "freshie" although he won't bite unless you annoy him big time

The cruise pulls up in the wetlands and out come the drinks and nibbles, yum

All you can drink so we gave it a little nudge

Kim, the Captain, injects ready caught fish with air via a syringe to make them float, and the eagles dive in for their feed

This is what happens when Jayne gets the camera

Lake Argyle Resort

When we were in this area last, we skipped Lake Argyle Resort as you can't book sites here and have to queue up at 9am to be allocated a spot. This palaver isn't on for us. Kununurra is 70kms away so for us to leave there to arrive here by 9am to queue is someone's dream, but our nightmare.

However this time as we came into WA from Zebra Rock Mine which is in the Northern Territory we had an extra 1.5 hours up our sleeve due to the time difference. So we were able to arrive at Lake Argyle at 8.30am WA time, and of course we got a good spot. But the site was so dusty we decided to move the next day, so we went from a dustbowl site to a nice grassy site.

It was such a good site we extended our stay from 4 days to 7 days.

Such a great view

Every second afternoon at sunset they have a free show, he's not bad either

Bailey was a star at this show, and Steve the singer even sang a song on dogs just because Bailey was there.

So many people came up to us to meet Bailey (and took photos of him) we felt second rate

We did the 6km ridge walk to the Bluff. It was very hot so Bailey stayed behind

The view from the Bluff, something isn't it?

The homestead of the famous Durack family who opened up this area for cattle farming.

The home was relocated since the dam put it's original location 40 metres underwater

The infinity pool that Lake Argyle Resort is famous for

The water has a 5 metre drop over the edge, so it's always freezing in the pool

I reckon it's designed like this to keep people out of the water!

Our grassy site which we watered every morning and night to keep green

Walk to the Ord River Gorge. Bailey joined us as we headed off at 7am before the heat

Lake Argyle Dam

Ord River, there's crocs in those waters

Sunset Cruise on Lake Argyle

We drove 1.5kms up a 4x4 only road to the best sunset viewing spot.

We shared the view with a lovely family of 5, and a couple of others.

Full moon from this viewing point
