Middle Lagoon and back to Goombaragin

Middle Lagoon

After 6 nights at Goombaragin it was time to move on for more adventures.

So we travelled 30kms down the corrugated dirt track to Middle Lagoon, where the camping ground is much larger and more commercial than tiny, exclusive Goombaragin.

The camping is very different on "The Ridge" which overlooks a really nice beach and the sunsets are right in your face every night. So much so you have to have shade up until about 30 minutes before sunset otherwise you get fried. Last time we camped on The Ridge we nearly got blown away. As you can see you're very exposed here.

Fortunately the whole six days we were here there was absolutely no wind. Just perfect conditions.

They have an on-site take-away lunch shop which is run by one of the the local family. It was never open and according to Herbie (one of the family), it only opens when his niece could be bothered.  So disappointing, as there are hundreds of campers with pockets full of cash and nowhere to spend it.  Down the road is Whalesong Cafe, a really lovely place for breakfast or lunch, but she had also closed up the day we decided to go.  Apparently she was overwhelmed by school holiday-makers, and had served 70 people before 11 am.  She threw her hands up, and shut up shop.  We've had this experience before there, so it was no real surprise.  Annoying, especially considering the number of people who intend visiting.

It's a very sociable scene here, and our site was in a perfect location for chatting with everyone who came down for sunset viewing.

There are 13 Ridge sites which are very spacious. Despite this some campers still take it upon themselves to have their tent/ropes across into their neighbours site. Not very friendly at all

Middle Lagoon was BushTracker heaven while we were there, and the most common caravan here. We counted 8 on two nights, more than any other brand.

Next time we come here we're going to be in a more exclusive Jayco!

Sunsets to die for right from our van

We ventured up to Cygnet Bay Pearls for a spot of lunch one day. It was very civilised, however it's a 40 minute drive along the corrugated dirt track to the tarred road, even without the van. And then another 45 minutes up the tar to One Arm Point where Cygnet Bay Pearls is.  It gave us a chance to do a bit of shopping at the One Arm Point supermarket, and call into Lombardina for fresh bread baked 3 times a week.

A nice deck to have lunch and a few drinks

The main road into Middle Lagoon. A very challenging drive especially when two big caravans are trying to pass each other!

Thankfully there are areas where you can pass and change over times are self controlled by the time it takes to get there

Bailey loves the smooth water at Middle Lagoon

After 13 years he's finally learnt how to retrieve something thrown to him. This is a new skill for him as normally if you threw something, he just looks at you and says "Why did you throw that away?"

Middle Lagoon is a fishing haven, so just to make sure we didn't conform with the hundreds of grey nomads there, we didn't go fishing at all.  Our boat stayed firmly bolted to the car roof, and we didn't even get the rods out for any rock or beach fishing. The keen fishermen left just after dawn and returned well after lunch, and seemed to be catching quite a bit. But those fishing from the beaches or rocks didn't catch a thing. We certainly don't want to be slaves to fishing. We would much rather be slaves to relaxing and enjoying life.

We'll buy nice local Barramundi and chips when we're back in Broome at Bluey's. A much better way for us to fish!

Back to Goombaragin

When we left here 6 days ago, the managers made us an offer to come back after Middle Lagoon and stay at one of their Eco Tents sites.  It had been decommissioned as an Eco Tent this year due to damage over the Christmas wet. This site has power, water and a rainforest outdoor shower complete with a deck with exceptional views. It's actually the only caravan site in the whole Dampier Peninsula that we know which has power. A nice luxury.

We thought about this for all of a day at Middle Lagoon and decided to come back here. Well, it's just amazing.

This is the same site Luke and Megan have booked themselves into in 12 days time.

We're back in Broome on Friday 27th, before we finally start heading south to Exmouth.
